Nursing informatics is a specialty that supports nursing through the integration of information science, computer science, nursing science to provide data communication management (Darvish et al., 2014). With technology advancing most hospitals have incorporated electronic health records, as this eases documentation and transfer of information between healthcare staff it can also present an issue with keeping the patient’s privacy. The ANA’s Code of Ethics for nurses states the nurse’s ethical responsibility to safeguard the patient privacy and maintain confidentiality of their patient information (ANA, 2014). A breach can occur at any hospital and an unauthorized user can access the patient’s electronic records, nurses have to make sure to log in and out whenever they access their patient’s medical records so no one else can access that information. Nursing informatics supports the patient as well as the healthcare team it improves information processes and information technology in healthcare, the benefits have proved to outweigh the risks.
