As a professional nurse there are many different areas and opportunities to care for people in the community who do not have access to healthcare reform. Clinics, nonprofit community organizations, missionary trips, and churches are all places that a professional nurse can volunteer to help people in the community without healthcare. Nurses can volunteer in areas other than healthcare to care for the community because they have qualities such as teamwork, empathy, multi-tasking, and how to empathize with people and be able to apply these to different volunteer opportunities. A recent study suggested that “80 percent of 315 nurses surveyed were helping to improve their community’s healthcare beyond the traditional health care setting” (Fishman, 2018). Other nurses provide free health care screenings at community events, serve on local boards, promote and educate the community about the importance of vaccinations.
