Nurses are faced with a number of ethical dilemmas every day. There will be many cases in which a nurse will have to refer to nursing code of ethic to deal with these challenging decisions. "The Code of Ethics is the social contract that nurses have which exemplifies our profession's promise to provide and advocate for safe, quality care for all patients” (ANA, 2001). As nurses we must prioritize patient advocacy and ensure that the patients receive all the information, they need to make decisions about their own health, treatment, and rights in a particular situation. Situations in which I could face as a future nurse might be the need to advocate for patients or assist them to advocate for themselves with end of life decisions. It is important that we inform patients about advanced directives such as their living will, which involves the plan of patients anticipated care, such as life-sustaining measures and treatment preferences. Additionally, inform them about choosing a health care durable power of attorney who will be making decisions for them when they are no longer capable. Introducing the topic of end of life care decisions to a patient is very difficult but it is essential that we offer them all the resources and options, such as hospice care, that the patient and family need to make a decision about their end of life.
The post describes the necessity of living will or advance directive which has to be advocated to a patient by a nurse.In future the end of life care to patients and family members should be informed ,so that they can take a decision.It stresses the importance of power of attorney ,who is eligible to make decision on behalf of the patient when they are incapable or not in sound mind.The resources available if one decides on this topic in the care of a patient has to be informed.
