Mandatory staffing ratios for nurses in California was implemented in 2004 in effort to improve the quality of care as well as nurse job satisfaction. When nurses have less patients in their care for they give higher quality of care. A study done in California, New Jersey and Pennsylvania based on 22,336 hospital staff nurses and state discharge databases that showed that in California, where there is mandatory staffing ratios it had lower patient mortality. Moreover, the study found that in California there was more job satisfaction and less burnouts.

Self-scheduling allows for nurses to chose when they are available without the scheduling system of a manager. Self-scheduling for nurses accommodates their daily life and makes them feel happy about being at the job because they choose the times and days they work. There are still certain rules they must follow even with self scheduling. “Nurses schedule their shifts under certain conditions and parameters such as requirements for working a certain number of week-end shifts and ensuring scheduling meets patient census predictions” (Russell, 2012).
