The nursing profession is so diverse when it comes to scheduling. Depending in the area of discipline you work it will come with different demands. Some facilities carry out different shifts such as twelve hours shifts and in others a nurse may work a shorter shift such as an eight hour shift. Most nurses these days work three days with twelve hour shifts in a week. Patient care will always be a primary focus in the profession of nursing however, working long hour shifts can have some positive and negative effects to both patient care and staff. In the case of a nurse who’s working a twelve hour shift, working a longer shift can promise less patient handoffs ("Nursing Debate: 8-Hour Shifts vs. 12-Hour Shifts," 2016). Which also means less reports and less chances for miscommunication amongst one another since the nurse is with the patient longer. However, one of the negatives is that working a longer shifts can cause the nurse to feel fatigued and possibly experience a burnouts and due to this instance can cause patient care errors. While shorter shifts can result in less burnouts, fewer errors, less on the job injuries, and can also improve patient satisfaction ("Nursing Debate: 8-Hour Shifts vs. 12-Hour Shifts," 2016).

The increase in the demand of the nurses and due to low availability, the nurses have to work in double shifts or sometimes 12 hours. Although by increasing the working hours of nurses may cover the need of more nursing professionals, the nurses working in a long shift have burnout and hence it decreases the quality of care provided to the patients.While shorter shifts can result in less burnouts, fewer errors, less on the job injuries, and can also improve patient satisfaction.
