Discuss characteristics used to appraise when evaluating qualitative and quantitative designs. Which characteristics are the most important and why? For the 0.5 of you that read my posts on the semi regular (besides the professor administrating and grading these assignments of course), you will notice a common theme: "human beings are inherently bias and the greatest part of the scientific method is the reduction or removal of that bias". This is why the criteria for a journal article to be coveted and desired requires a few things. One of those things is peer revision. It doesn't matter how precise, how much data you collect or your conclusion, if your study is picked apart by peer revision, you don't really have anything. So being able to critically think (remember that class?) and appraise the design on a study will facilitate your and others' work. It's sort of a foundation thing. If a design is flawed, the whole study is too. Starting with the strongest we have: The Amalgamations: meta-analysis, systematic reviews of RTCs (randomized controlled trials) and current practice guidelines (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). I call this the amalgamations because these are the design studies that review the works of others. Meta-analysis is defined as the statistical review of a number of articles that study the same thing. Systemic Reviews of RTCs is a review of, you guessed it, a number of randomized controlled trials. The third item is a little bit more elusive. Current practice guidelines, according to Schmidt and Brown (2019) started in Canada and then later in the United States. The idea was to share cost benefit analysis for treatments of conditions and diseases to find the best practice. The idea is to amalgamate findings of a great number of sources to definitively prove a finding. The lowest design: Ballpark figures: opinion of authorities, reports of expert committees, manufacturer's recommendations, traditional literature review (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). Rather than belabor each point, I'll explain one point and you can see how it applies to the others. I once had a friend who bought himself a brand new shinny BMW but he was filling it with 87 octane gas. When questioned about it, he stated that he did a boat load of research and found that the manufacturer's recommendation of 92 octane gas isn't a requirement. The more singular the source of information, the less reliable it is. I'll bet that the average nursing student could name at least three psychologists of yesteryear. Can they name one alive? It's unlikely. Philip Zimbardo is, but he's... that's a special case and he hasn't done anything since the prison experiment. No the reason this is is because Psychology is a science (in addition to being an art) and they know that one source of data is unreliable. Many different researchers are working together across a number of different institutions to research phenomena.
