People become more sedentary with age. According to a recent Swedish study, physical activity is the most important contributor to longevity and will also add life to your years. Physical exercise boosts energy level, increases flexibility, alleviate the symptoms of chronic illness like arthritis, diabetes, and osteoporosis. These are all age-related disorders.

Physical exercise increases the oxygen level in the body and maximal oxygen uptake is the primary indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness especially in old-age. Skeletal muscles in old people have a lower capacity to use oxygen and muscle mass starts to decline after 30 years of age. All these problems are overcome by physical exercise.
