RBC indices are calculated parameters which includes Mean cell (or corpuscular) volume, (MCV)Mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), and Mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). The main purpose of the RBC indices is to help with differentiation of anemia types.
Calculation of RBC indices include the equation and steps from the given data is described below
The RBC morphology
1) If the MCV is in normal range the RBC is normocytic. If less than 80 FL RBC is mocrocytic and if more than 96 FL it is macrocytic.
2) If the MCHC is in noemal limits the RBC is normochromic. If less than 33.4 gm/g/dL hypochromic and if more than 35.5 gm / dL ti is hyperchromic.
Based on the patient value the morphology of the RBC is microcytic and hypochromic as the MCV is 70.03 FL and MCHC is 27.77gm / dL

A 30-year-old woman is seen by her physician during her first pregnancy. Her diet for the last year or two consisted of 4 two liter bottles of Pepsi per day and "maybe a little something for supper". Her hematocrit is 18 % and her RBC count is 1.5 x 10°/UL. Her hemoglobin was 6.0 g/dL. Calculate her RBC indices. 3 pt Based on the above date, her RBCs are: (describe the morphology) 2...
A 45-year old woman complains of tiredness and weakness. She appears pale. Laboratory results are as follows: hemoglobin 6.2 g/dL, hematocrit 20%, MVC 75 fL, MCHC 28%. On further questioning, she reports excessive menstrual bleeding, sometimes lasting for several weeks. 1. Does this patient need a transfusion? Why or why not? 2. If the intern decides to give 1 unit of RBC's, what would be the resulting hemoglobin and hematocrit levels? A 22 year old woman presents with easy bruising...
A 5-year-old white boy was admitted with a fractured tibia following a playground accident. A CBC was ordered on admission. Parameter Result Reference Range Hemoglobin 10.2 g/dL 11.5-13.5 g/dL Hematocrit 27% 34-41% RBC 3.6 x 1012/L 3.9-5.3 x 1012/L WBC 12.5 x 109/L 4.5-13.5 x 109/L MCV 96.4 fL 75-87 fL MCH 28.3 pg 24-30 pg MCHC 38 % 31-36 % The peripheral blood smear revealed anisocytosis, polychromasia, and numerous RBCs that appeared small and dense when compared to normal...

A 65-year-old man has chills, high spiking fevers, cough, and signs of consolidation in the left lower lobe of his lung. Blood is drawn for a CBC, sputum is collected for Gram stain and culture, and a chest X-ray film is obtained. Laboratory data are: Hemoglobin: 14.5 g/dL Hematocrit: 42% Red cell indices: All within normal limits White cell count: 24.0 ´ 109/L White cell differential: Segmented neutrophils: 33% Band neutrophils: 61% Lymphocytes: 6% Platelet estimate: Normal with normal morphology...
On a cold February day, a 6-year-old boy was brought to the emergency room by his frantic mother because he had passed red urine and looked very pale. He was a normal, active boy, and in fact has played out in the snow the day before. He had the "flue" for about 1 week about 10 days before this episode. He had not received any medication except acetaminophen. On admission, his CBC values were: WBC 12.0 x 10^9L, RBC 3...
A 58-year-old white man presented to his physician for evaluation of leukocytosis found incidentally on a complete blood count performed at a health fair. He had no current complaints, but when questioned, reported felling of fullness in the left upper quadrant of his abdomen. He reported no recent fevers night sweats, or weight loss. He worked as a supervisor in an automobile assembly plant. On physical examination, he was found to have splenomegaly, with the spleen tip barely palpable below...
Case Study : A 70-yr-old male, who had been getting progressively more tired and lethargic the past few months, sought medical advice. The patient appeared thin with noticeable pallor of the nail beds and mucus membranes. A CBC revealed his hemoglobin to be 9.1 g/dL and his hematocrit was 30.0%. He was placed on iron supplementation and told to return for follow-up blood work in six weeks. Six weeks later his hematocrit had dropped to 25.7% (see CBC below). CBC...
(2) Just over 2 weeks ago (15 days ago), a 35 yr. old male subject presented with complaints tiredness" and that he "fatigues easily" with any simple exertion. At that time a blood sample was taken his CBC values were: (15 pts) RBCs = 3.99 x 1012 cells/L, Het = 42.8 %, HigB = 10.1 g/dL. Answer Based on these values, was he anemic? ( Yes / No) Based on: Low Hct/ Low HgB/ Both Low / Both Normal (...
A 80-year-old man presents to the emergency department (ED) complaining of right-sided chest pain when he breathes and a productive cough. A sputum sample collected revealed rust-colored sputum. He also states that his symptoms began abruptly with chills the day before this visit to the ED; he had previously been healthy.
