Definition: Drug abuse can be defined as non permissive consumption of certain drugs that alter the mechanism of the brain and leads to chronic dependence of the drug and seeking behaviour to use it compulsively.

Two major patterns

Continuous use : subject wishes to take daily. E.g. alcohol,opioids.

Occasional use : subject wishes to take during parties generally e.g. amphetamine,cannabis,cocaine

Interventions:

Behavioral:

Skipping schools,increase in arguments,sudden financial decline,hanging with new friends,loosing interest in activities,carving performance.

Treatment:

Psychosocial improvement:

behavioral changes: lifestyle modifications,skill devolopmen.

Abstinence based : self help, drug free residential rehabilitation.

Pharmacological improvement : it includes detoxification and relapse prevention for drug carving and use.

Strategies of different countries to prevent drug abuse:

UK : based on four principles 1.reducing demand 2.restricting supply 3.building recovery 4.global action

India: based on four principles 1.prevention 2.harm reduction 3.treatment and recovery 4.community safety.
