Question

Without an intact nervous system, the body will not be able to function normally. The nervous system controls other organ systems in the body and is in turn dependent on the other systems. Outline how the two branches of the nervous system modulate the functions of the body as a whole. Your article should be at least one page long, using Times New Roman Font and 1.5 spacing. I am most interested in how you are using medical terminology to describe and explain this topic.

Answer #1

The nervous system is the part of an individual that would coordinate its actions by transmitting signals to and from various parts of body. The human nervous system is branched into two to :

# CNS (central nervous system)

# PNS( peripheral nervous system)

CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord. The CNS is contained within the dorsal body cavity, with the brain housed into the cranial cavity with the spinal cord into the spinal canal. In the vertebrates the brain is being encased by the skull and protected by cranium and the spinal cord by the vertebrae. These both are enclosed in the meninges. The spinal cord reaches base of the skull continues to the foramen magnum and terminate with first or second lumbar vertebra. The functions are as follows: the CNS controls most functions of the body and mind. The brain would be the center of the thoughts, interpret or of the external environment, and the origin of control over body movement. It interprets information from all sensory organs including internal organs such as stomach.

The peripheral nervous system PNS is one of two components that make up the nervous system. The PNS consists of nerves, ganglia, outside brain and the spinal cord. These are again branches into motor and efferent nerves and subdivided into subsystem the somatic, autonomic and enteric nervous systems. The main functions of this system are: to connect the CNS to the limbs and organs, essentially serving as a relay between the brain and spinal cord and the rest of the body.

The Brain on Mind Altering Drugs Psychoactive drugs alter brain function by acting at synapses in the brain, where they may mimic, enhance, or block the effects of natural signaling molecules (neurotransmitters). The neurotransmitter dopamine plays a particularly important role in creating the dependency aspect of both drug and behavioral addictions. Natural behaviors which enhance survival and/or reproduction, such as eating or engaging in sex, result in a surge of dopamine.
