Answer #1

a) Given  Sx = 378.451 Sy= 11.725 , r = 0.737

Slope. b = r * (Sy /Sx ) = 0.737*(11.725/378.451)

b = 0.0228

b) Given. X bar = 603.64 and y bar = 20.55

Intercept a = ybar - (b* x bar )

a = 20.55 - (0.0228*603.64)

a = 6.79

c) the estimated regression equation is

y^ = 6.79 + 0.0228 * x

d) here we asked the predicted lung cancer rate ( y^ ) for per capita cigarette consumption x = 400

y^ = 6.79 + 0.0228*400

y^ = 15.91

    Lung Cancer & Smoking Case Study A causal relationship between cigarette smoking and lung cancer was first suspected in the 1920s on the basis of clinical observations. To test this apparent association, numerous epidemiologic studies were undertaken between 1930 and 1960. Two studies were conducted by Richard Doll and Austin Bradford Hill in Great Britain The first was a case-control study begun in 1947 comparing the smoking habits of lung cancer patients with the smoking habits of other patients. Regression and Correlation Methods: Correlation, ANOVA, and Least Squares This is another way of assessing the possible association between a normally distributed variable y and a categorical variable x. These techniques are special cases of linear regression methods. The purpose of the assignment is to demonstrate methods of regression and correlation analysis in which two different variables in the same sample are related. The following are three important statistics, or methodologies, for using correlation and regression: Pearson's correlation coefficient ANOVA...
