Nursing is a noble profession of health protection, promotion, healing and optimization, prevention of illness , injuries, and minimization of suffering through diagnosis, treatment and care for patients. Nurses are prone to stress and difficult situations as they provide daily healthcare for patients. This puts nurses at the risk of anxiety, depression, stress-related illnesses. Therefore resilience training and coping mechanisms is important to maintain balance in work and life.
The American Psychological Association has suggested some factors which can help nurses in increasing and supporting their resilience
Nurses should be able to take control of their heart, mind, and body throughout the day. Nurses need to be able to love and accept who they are as a person, and understand what they need to be to work on their resiliency skills. Besides nurses should incalculate the following qualities to build up resilence.
Effective communication is the key for patient safety and quality care.Poor communication practices in health care are a root cause of poor outcomes for patients. Therefore effective communication is important to the role of nurses in influencing and improving patient outcomes (Adams & Osborne-McKenzie, 2012). Further, effective communication practised by the entire care team increases shared knowledge and goals concerning patients and their plan of care (Radtke, 2013).
Nurse leaders should develop a “teaming strategy” to plan how people will act and work together, including effective use of communication technology to help them make better use of face-to-face time. In healthcare, good team building happens where all team members understand, believe in and work towards the shared purpose of caring and working for patient. Team leaders should talk about the team purpose at every opportunity, in particular how it links to the individual purpose of each team member.
