Answer #1

Kovat’s Retention Index is the logarithmic scale that relates the retention time tmr of an analyte to those of linear alkanes in a column containing the stationary phase. According to homologous series method (eg. linear alkanes) elutes in the increasing order of their molecular masses, for instance lowest molecular weight, melting point, boiling point compound elutes first due to the intermolecular forces in the organic compound.

The expression relating number of carbons of the analyte and its retention time is related as:-

log(tr) - log(tr, n) RI = 100[n+ (N − n), log(tr, N) -log(tr, n)

where n is the smaller analogue carbon series while N larger homologue carbon series.
