The patient was a 3 1 week old male who was born at term. At birth he had a left diaphragmatic hernia that was repaired soon after. He required intubation at that time and continued to require respiratory support. Over a 24- hour period, the infant developed bulging anterior fontanelles (soft spot in an infants skull). WBC increased from 6300 to 13,700/ul. The child began to have seizures. CSF examination showed high WBC and a CSF glucose to serum glucose ration was 0.5. Gram stain of the child's CSF contained a Gram positive diplococci. 1. What is your diagnosis of the patient? 2. What is the likely organism causing this infection? 3. What laboratory test would you run to confirm? 4. How would you treat?

1.patients wBC count is high than normal and sugar is also high and the diploccoci is present in csf this results indicates that he has meningittis.it is an inflammation which occurs in the meningus (outerlayer of brain)

2. It is a bacterial infection which can be fatal for the child.it is mainly caused by steptococcus pneumoniae,staphylo coccus,neisseria mengittidis.
