a. The coercive leadership style, first described by Daniel Goleman in 2002, was one of the six documented leadership styles. The authoritarian ruler requests that their orders be complied with immediately. The coercive leader has a style best described as: do what I'm telling you or otherwise. Through threatening and sometimes even demeaning the followers, the authoritarian leader performs tasks.
b. The style of coercive leadership is best used in circumstances where a full transformation attempt is needed by the organization or followers. It is effective during disasters, for example, or dealing with employees under performance, usually as a last resort. Under these conditions, the immediate fulfillment of an order or instruction speeds the path to recovery. Sadly, analysis by Goldman reveals that this style has a very negative impact on the working environment as a whole. This style provides little opportunity for reward, and it removes all responsibilities for their individual actions from the workers by demanding compliance with orders A coercive leader is going to look at a situation. They will then tell workers what to do, how to do it, and when to do the work. These leaders are always waiting for immediate and absolute compliance. Any order issued without question should be followed. If a direct report fails to complete a task as assigned or refuses to follow orders, there are often fast repercussions. Managers who use this leadership style also often refuse bonuses for fear of making them look weaker as a professional
c. A coercive leader allows the workplace to have zero excuses. If you are a direct report receiving an order, then the assignment is expected to be followed up by you. There is no space for the ifs, ands, or ambitions that may allow for other leadership styles. You can either finish the job or the next day you don't have a job. Coercive leaders provide a diagram or dream of the work to be done. So they want the work to be done without doubt by their key employees. Once a coercive leader takes over, this process improves the efficiency of most teams. Typically, the improved efficiency also leads to improved production. Coercive leaders are also well-read about their workplace's rules and regulations. This allows the leader to issue orders that enable their team at all times to complete work that meets or exceeds quality standards. The process includes internal rules, ensuring problems such as racism and bullying appear to be less likely to occur when a dominant leader is in the helm.
d. Recognizing a situation where someone uses the coercive style of leadership at work is simple. Words that could be used to describe such an individual include: implacable, overbearing, unyielding, persistent, harsh, and ruthless. Typically the terms associated with intimidation leave people inside with a very negative feeling. That's how workers feel when reporting to a boss who doesn't know it's time to stop using the type of intimidation. This brings up a final point to be understood. There is a time and place where the style of coercion is highly effective, especially during a crisis. This style's disturbing aspect when it's exploited. Managers who act as if every day there is a crisis, and continue to use this style for a long time, do more harm than good to the morale of an organization. Left unchecked, employee performance may also be degraded.
