Heel stick procedure

  • Description of the procedure
    • It is a simple procedure where blood sample is collected from the heel by a small prick on it
  • Indication
    • As a new born screening test
    • When only a very small quantity of blood is needed for investigations
    • To rule out genetic disease
    • To check blood glucose
    • To do blood gas analysis in infants
  • Nursing intervention
    • Pre:Inform, explain and get consent from the parents to do the procedure ,expose the heel to be pricked, remove I'd there is covering of any dressing on it
    • Intra:hold the child's leg to immobilize, give a gentle ,single stroke,collect the blood in the litmus paper or as per order
    • Post,make sure the bleeding stops,infection control measures to reduce infection, pain management
  • Interpretation of findings
    • Can bpread out genetic abnormalities
  • Client education
    • Inform about the procedure
  • Potential complications
    • Pain
    • Injury at the site of pricking
  • Nursing intervention
    • Soothe the child
    • Provide comfort measures
    • Avoid direct application of pressure on the site
