Throat Culture

Description, Procedure, and Nurse duty- In this test, we have to take secretion of the throat by a swab stick and send it to a microbiology laboratory for bacterial and viral culture to detect any throat or upper respiratory tract infection.

First, wash the mouth of patient with clean water. Remember do not use any type of antiseptic or plane mouth wash to wash the patient's mouth, it may affect the test result.

Find a sterile cotton swab stick and label it with the patient's name and identification number. Then explain the procedure to the client and tell him to keep the tongue out of the mouth. Use tongue depressures for easy assess to the throat.

Then rub the swad around the throat and keep the swab in a sterile container without touching anywhere.

Indication - Throat infection, tonsilitis, pneumonia, TB, whooping cough, etc.

Findings - The main findings are the causative organisms mean the types of bacteria or viruses, as for example infection of streptococcus bacteria.

Complication - There is no major complication involves in this procedure, There may be throat irritation for some times in some cases.

Client education - Explain the benefits of procedure that we can detect the particular organism which is causative agent of your infection. The benefit of this is we can provide you a specific antibacterial drug according to test result which will cure your infection more faster and reduces side effects.
