Answer #1

In inorganic qualitative analysis, Co2+ is a group IV cation and Ba2+ a Group V cation.

First make the original solution of containing cobalt and barium ions.

To this original solution, add dilute HCl. If a white precipitate is formed, first group cations are present. May be lead, silver and mercurous ions are present. Filter the precipitate.

Pass H2S gas through filterate, if black precipitate is formed, Group II cations are present. If not group II cations are absent.

Add Ammonium chloride and Ammonium hydroxide to the solution. If a precipitate is formed, III group cations are present. Otherwise Group III cations are absent.

Pass H2S gas through the solution. Group IV cations are present. Filter the precipitate. The precipitate consists of only cobalt ions. Barium ions are present in the filterate.

To the filterate, add Ammonium chloride, ammonium hydroxide and Ammonium carbonate, all the barium ions precipitated as BaCO3.

In Group IV, Cobalt ions are precipitated and in group V barium ions are precipitated.

Synthesis of n-Butyl Bromide Purpose of the Experiment: In this week's experiment you will be synthesizing n-butylbromide (IUPAC 1-bromobutane from 1-butanol and a concentrated acid via a nucleophilie substitution reaction. It is important to know that alcohols dehydrate to form alkenes in the presence of strong inorganic acids, so care must be taken in this experiment not to heat the reaction too vigorously else an elimination reaction may...
