ABSTRACT

Teenage pregnancy is a developing public health concern in the united state, especially in rural areas.

INTRODUCTION

Teenage pregnancy, also known as adolescent pregnancy.this is a pregnancy when females get pregnant under the age of 20.

This type of pregnancy will lead to low birth weight, premature labor, anemia, and pre-eclampsia.

Conditions result in teenage pregnancy are:

• From economically disadvantaged families and communities
• Having low aspirations from their own educational achievement
• From dysfunctional families
• Having behavioral problems

Risk factors

Population

teens live in urban or rural areas give birth between 15-19 years old most likely.

Per capita income

This defines as the income per person in a population. This indicates a country's standard of living.

Various studies shows that teens growing up in disadvantaged economic,familial and social circumstances are most likely to have child during their adolescent years.

Education and unemployment

Teenage pregnancy is the result of lower level of education,welfare dependency and low paying jobs which lead to greater health troubles for these teens and their babies.

Cigarette and alcohol consumption

teens who smoke and consume alcohol found to be at greater risk for teenage pregnancy comparing to others.

METHODS

This can be done by two methods

• Artificial neural network(ANN)
• Support vector machine(SVM)

ANN and SVM models

were used for the data analysis. Six fundamental steps for the model construction are involved.

Step 1:the outcome variable in the teenage pregnancy rate and its risk factors like per capita income ,poverty rate, unemployment, low education, cigarette and alcohol consumption were collected in a fixed format.

Step 2:a trial and error process was performed.

Step3: all models were trained and tested to achieve minimal error by cross-validation.

Step 4 : evaluation of the result of ANN and SVM models done in this step.

Step5: in this step prediction error is measured by the mean absolute percentage error.

Step 6 : This step provides a hierarchal viewpoint of the ranking of risk factors.

RESULTS

The teenage pregnancy rate is highly influenced by the risk factors like per capita income , poverty rate, unemployment, low education, cigarette, and alcohol consumption.

Intervention programs must be implemented to reduce the teenage pregnancy rate.

CONCLUSIONS

ANN and SVM models proved their validity and applicability. The risk factors (like per capita income ,poverty rate, unemployment , low education, cigarette, and alcohol consumption) identified in ANN and SVM models show an influence on teenage pregnancy.
