Erickson’s stage of industry vs inferiority

It is the fourth stage of personality development that occurs in children of school-going age (6-11years).

During this stage, the children are capable of reading and writing and doing things on their own. Now children are taught and they also capable of learning new things and new skills.

They gained self-esteem in peer groups. The children are now encouraged to learn new things and to do activities in the group by which a child can now feel competent.

By doing the activities successfully in the peer group they are valued by the society which gives them a sense of pride. It again encourages them to feel competent and industrious.

The child now needs to cope of with society, social demand, and academic demands. Failure in any activity in peer-group makes them feel a sense of inferiority.

The feelings of superiority or pride by achieving a goal and felling of inferiority by failure remains for a lifetime after this stage.
