Phantom limb pain ( PLP) is a common complication after amputation..PLP is a main source of morbidity and it should be treated immediately..Intravenous administration of calcitonin may be related to its peak concentration..still mechanism of action is unknown..This drug increase the production of B- endorphin, the process endogenous opioid system independent..calcitonin stimulate serotonergic neurones,which blocked by methysergide..calcitonin binding site near brain area rich in serotonin support this hpothesis..calcitonin leads to decreased formation of local cytokinesis and prostaglandin,which is generating pain..oral administration of calcitonin opoid analgesics have proved helpful..1 or 2 IV doses of calcitonin 200IU) effective treatment for phantom limb pain..
