crepitus is a normal sound in young people, any grinding, crunching or popping sound that occurs while moving a joint and are most common in older adults.

it can be caused

  • by popping of air bubbles inside the joint.
  • snapping of tendons or ligaments over joint bones.
  • arthritis like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

during arthritis, inflammation of joint occurs, due to improper functioning of the immune system - releases inflammatory chemicals which attacks joint tissue(results in joint swelling, increased joint fluid, cartilage and bone damage and muscle loss) leads to degeneration of articular cartilage. Thus, the joint is not protected against friction and impacts. Also, damage of cartilage affects joint's biomechanics and bones grind each other these results in crepitus.
