Bactrim belongs to the group of sulfonamides which is a combination of both sulfamethaxazole and trimethoprim.

Indications :

It is actually used to treat many bacterial infections.

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Respiratory Infections
  • Intestinal and
  • Middle ear infections.

Side effects of Bactrim

These include moderate to severe form of side effects.

  • Dizziness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Ringing sound in the ears
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bruising
  • Bleeding
  • Hepatic coma
  • Skin rashes
  • Itching
  • Headache

In the above scenario Patient developed severe rashes with swollen face which is a side effect of the drug.

Steps to be taken are

Administer either corticosteroids or antihistamine drugs immediately.

Educate the patient regarding the side effects and provide psychological support explaining that it can be relieved as soon as possible

Always ask the patient to avoid wine and other preservative foods to reduce the triggers.
