The heat gained by water during heating , q = m*s*DT where m is mass of water, s is specific heat of water and DT is change in temperature.

mass of water = 20 gms (dH2O = 1gm/mL) and assuming room temperature as 25 degree Celsius

The heat gained by water during heating , q = m*s*DT = 20*4.184*(40-25) = 1255.2 J

The heat lost by water during cooling, q = m*s*DT where m is mass of water, s is specific heat of water and DT is change in temperature.

The heat lost by water during cooling, q = m*s*DT = 20*4.184*(25-10) = 1255.2 J
