How do you think low literacy impacts a person’s ability to seek health care? What are the long-range health problems that can develop without preventive health care?
Literacy and healthcare-seeking behaviour
The ability to read and write is called literacy. Literacy can impact a person's ability to seek health care. Low literacy or illiteracy makes a person to stop from accessing the health care in most of the cases. Many studies conducted in developing and under developed countries, specially women are hesitant to seek health services as they have some perceived barriers such as ' dont want to go alone', 'getting permission from home' etc. Shame about their illiteracy condition, emotional troubles, difficulty in understanding instructions ( written), ignorance about health matters all may contribute to the decreaseed ability to seek health services.
Long- range health problems in the absence of preventive health care :
Preventive health care or preventive medicine focuses on measures taken for disease prevention rather than disease treatment. Half of all deaths in the United States were due to preventable diseases.
If the preventive health care is absent or not developed well in a country, it may leads to :
1. The increased mortality rate due to preventable disease like heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
2. Increase in occurance of communicable diseases due to inadequate vaccination services.
3. Increase in substance abuse leads to increase in criminal incidents
4. Rising health cost beyond control.
5. Increase rate of accidents .
6. Late stage identification of diseases
7. Loss of economic productivity
8. Increased maternal and infant death.
9. Increased domestic violence and child abuse.
