An injury to the tooth which results in sensitivity to cold, air and pain indicates dentin of the tooth has been injured.

The outer part of the tooth is called enamel, the middle part is dentin then the inner part is the pulp which contains nerve and blood vessels. When dentin is exposed it created 100s of microchannels to pulp which causes symptoms of sensitivity while exposing to the cold and hot.
