My Plate

My Plate is a food guide published by United States Department of Agriculture. My Plate replaced the Food pyramid concept. It is an easy way to find the healthy eating style. My Plate recommends four sections( grains-30%, vegetables- 40 %, fruits- 10% , protein 20%) and a glass of milk or yoghurt.

Daily eating log( sample menu) day 1

Breakfast

Bread ( 3 slices) with Chocolate cream or Jam

Coffee with milk ( 210 ml)

Break

Apple 1

Lunch

Pasta ( 1 cup)

Fried chicken 50 g

tomato soup

Evening snack

Green tea 1 glass

French fries and sausage

Dinner

Sandwich 1

Salmon ( fried piece)

Vegetable salad

Correlating with My Plate food guide:

Daily eating log contain no grains at all but My Plate recommends 30% of grains. According to My Plate, Vegetables should be 40 % fruits should be 10% whereas the daily eating log contains very less vegetables and 1 apple. Fat is not at all recommending by My Plate but fish, chips and chicken are deep fried ones. Coffee with milk can meet the needs of diary and chicken and fish can meet the needs of protein.Comparing with My Plate, daily food log is not healthy. Changes can be made to improve the food log.

Social and cultural factors that influence food choices:

Social and cultural factors that influence food choices are

* Social class; high class people tend to take costly and more nutritive food. Low socio economic people tend to take cheap food.

* Cultural and religious factors also determine the food choices. some religion follows dietary restrictions on non veg items.

* Availability and geographical location

* Education and Peer influence

* Family history and ethnicity

Other factors influence food choices are like and dislikes of individual, time and money, hunger and appetite etc.

To make diet healthy:

* Whole grain bread or oats instead of white bread

* Avoid fried food items, use grilled or baked fish or chicken.

* Add more green leafy vegetables into diet also fruits

* Use skimmed milk

* Avoid sugary drinks and foods.
