My Plate

My Plate is a food guide published by United States Department of Agriculture. It is a nutritional guide, helps the people to know the healthy eating style. My Plate has four sections and it recommends 30% grains, 40 % vegetables, 10% fruits and 20% protein and a glass of milk or yoghurt.

Daily eating log( sample menu)

Breakfast

Bread 3 slices with Chocolate cream or Jam

coffee with milk 210 ml

Lunch

Sandwich( 1) and tomato soup

Fried chicken ( 50 gm)

Fruits( grapes / apple 1 )

evening snack

Green tea

potato chips

Dinner

fried rice( 1 serving)

fish fry ( 1 piece)

vegetable salad

Comparison of food intake (sample menu) with My Plate.

Grains are very less as comparing to the 30% of grain part of My Plate. According to My Plate guidelines , diet should contain 40% vegetables and 10% fruits, where as ( sample menu) daily food log contains 10_ 15 % vegetables and 1 apple. Fat is not at all recommending by My Plate, but fried fish and chicken immersed in oil , will retain the oil in it. Daily requirement of protein can be met by chicken and fish item. Coffee with milk can meet the needs of diary.

Cultural and social factors that determining the food choices:

*social class: high class people tend to take costly and more nutritive food whereas low class people tend to take cheap food.

* Peer influence and availability is another factor that affect the food choices. Student who stay away from home, tend to take more instant food and their food patterns may change according to their friends pattern.

* Cultural and religious factors also determines a person's food choices

Other factors influence food choices are education, like and dislikes of individual, geographic location, type of work etc.

To make diet healthier:

*Avoid deep fried chicken and fish item. use grilled or baked fish or chicken.

* Add more green leafy vegetables into diet.

* Use whole wheat bread or oats instead of white bread.

* Use skimmed milk.
