lessons learnt from the subprime mortgage metldown are:

1) Understand the use of leveraged structured financial products well such as CDS,CDS, ABS etc.

2) Manage the risk using various tools such as VAR etc.

3) Manage and mitigate Counterparty risk, funding liquidity risk etc.

4) understand the use of SPV's

yes, a similar crisis could occur in the future as students loan are given at a very low interest rate without carrying out due diligence leading to problems of adverse selection and moral hazard; eventually the same vicious cycle of subprime mortgage crisis of 2007.
