One important ratio in your career will be the nurse to patient ratio. Discuss with the class what you think the nurse to patient ratio should be in an ideal world. What do you think is a realistic figure?

State whether the ratio would vary by the category of the patients - ICU, Telemetry, Emergency, Pre-Op, Post-Op, Neonatal, etc. Share your own experience if you wish. Finally, assuming your realistic figure, try to estimate using proportions how many nurses would be needed in a wing with 20 patients.

Nurse patient ratio means in a specific ward or area, there are how many patients per nurses. Nurses are the heart of the health care profession they play a vital role in health care, without a nurse we can not imagine health care.

Duties and responsibilities of nurses are different in different areas like ICU's, OT's and Emergency department, So the nurse-patient ratio should be different in different areas.

1. ICU's are the most critical area, where a fraction of second matters. There is numerous medical equipment In ICU(Intensive care unit), NICU(Neonatal care unit), PICU(Pediatric Intensive care unit)and CCU(Coronary cary care unit) like Monitor, Ventilator, Syringe pump, Defibrillator, etc. So, the nurse to patient ratio is 1:1.

2. Surgery is possible with teamwork there are many teams required in OT like anesthesia, surgeon, technicians, etc. In general surgery, there should be a scrub nurse, assistance nurses, floor nurses, and an anesthesia nurse required. So, nurse patIent ration in an OT is 4:1. It can be increased in a major OT like CTVS and Gastro surgery OT.

3. In HDU(High dependency unit) or Stepdown ICU Patients are still critical but not like ICU's and the medical equipment are less in HDU. So, the nurse-patient ratio of HDU is 1:2.

4. The emergency department is the first step of a patient in the hospital, in an emergency patient flow is very high and the majority are critically ill or critically injured. So, the nurses to patient ratio in an emergency is 1:1.

5. In General medicine, surgery, and Pre Operative ward patients are less critical and the majority of them can perform there ADL's(Activity of daily living) with or without assistance. So, the nurse to patient ratio in these wards is 3:1 to 4:1.

if it is an ICU then 20 nurses required with an in-charge nurse

HDU then 10 nurses required with an in-charge nurse

General ward 5 to 6 nurses required with an in-charge nurse

Emergency ward 20 nurses required with an in-charge nurse
