Burnout may be the result of relentless stress but it's not the same as excessive stress. Stress, on the whole, requires too much: too many demands that physically and mentally demand too much of you. However, stressed people can still imagine they will feel better if they can just get everything under control.
On the other hand, Burnout is not about enough. Burning out means feeling hollow and mentally exhausted, devoid of energy and beyond caring. People who experience burnout often see little possibility of positive change in their circumstances.
Workers with burnout are irritable, and may be susceptible to frustration feelings. While the connection between burnout and violent or threatening episodes is a stretch, the link to violence and burnout is significant, with burnout usually manifesting after a violent workplace incident has been involved or witnessed.
Track all individuals and the overall team workload. Beware of falling into the trap of piling in your best employees for too long with too much work. There are even limits to your superstars.
