Civility: It refers to Politeness . An individual act or manner of behaving which conforms to social conventions of propriety .

Civility best practices

American Nurses Association ( ANA) developed civility best practices for nurses to create a conducive environment, kindness and culture of civility, treating others ( co-workers, employees, students) with respect and dignity. Civility best practices developed by ANA are: using of Clear communication( verbally or non verbally), Avoidance of Gossip, Share information and Collaborate wherever necessary, Personal responsibility and accountability, treating others with dignity, demonstrate openness, encourage and mentor new nurses etc.

A)Two best practices ( that i would like to implement);

1. Treat others with dignity, respect

Treat others with dignity respect, kindness, dignity and collegiality is one of the important behaviour or civility best practices that can be implemented to develop a good professional life.One have to consider his or her word's and action's effect on others. Keep the respect for others in words and actions. Don't show partiality on the basis of race, language, colour or religion.

2. Speek directly with whom one has an issue.

Another civility best practice ( i want to implement) is ' Speek directly to the person ( colleague, co-workers, students and clients) with whom one has an issue'. One have to be ( I have to be) assertive in his or her words. Keeping the emotions or disagreement to one person in the heart and showing another behaviour is not a good pattern in a professional or personal  relationshilp, instead assertively respond to the person with politeness. Speaking openly and directly will help to resolve the problems.

B) Three leadership strategy to implement in work place to improve the civility are;

a) Race awareness to the need for civility in staff meetings and other common venues.

b) Discuss with co-workers about acceptable and unacceptable behaviours and co- create and abide by team norms

c) Share the organizational vision and statement of shared values to foster civility in work places.

Strategies other than ANA

a) Be a role model to other colleagues in civil communication ( listening, talking and in body language).

b) Self understanding or self awareness can help a person to identify his weakness and manage the situation ( where emotional outburst can occur).

c) Don't use labels such as ' sexist ', 'racist' to refer another person.

d) Respond assertively by standing up for yourself and others. Question incivility in a civil way.
