Endotracheal tube suction or any suction is necessary to clear secretion ans to maintain airway patency and to optimise oxygenation and ventilation in a ventilated patient.

STANDARD PROTOCOL OF SUCTIONING /ET TUBE :

  • Auscultate before and after ET tube suctioning to evaluate effectiveness of the procedure.
  • Closely monitored before, during and after the procedure like heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation.
  • Suction is done by the only tip portion of the ET tube, should never exceed more than 0.5 cm beyond the tip ET tube to prevent mucosul injury.
  • Explain to the procedure to the patient family member.
  • To determine suction catheter size.
  • Set the suction pressure ( 80-100cm H2O) .
  • Hand washing than don gloves .
  • Ensuring that suction catheter does not touch anything like bed linen.
  • Negative pressure given but not exceed 6 second.
  • Observed post physiological parametr.
  • Document effectiveness and tolerance of suctioning.
