-Ask about history of use of penicillin drugs and reactions to know about allergic response to drug.
- Assess the patient s vital signs and blood investigations prior to start therapy.
-Check for signs of infection by physical examination of appearance of wound (if present)and laboratory examination for sputum, urine, and stool, whole blood count..
-Collect sample for culture and sensitivity prior to initiation of therapy(if needed)
-Do not administer injection as IV push, always dilute the solution in 10mL of D5W or 0.9% NaCl and shake well. Further dilute in 100 mL of D5W or 0.9% NaCl and infuse over 20 - 30 minutes.
-Rconstituted medication will be stable in room temperature up to 4 hours and 24 hours in refrigerator.
-Do not mix or administer together with other antibacterial drugs and aminoglycosides, which may inactivate the effect of drug.
-Observe patient for signs and symptoms like rash, pruritus, laryngeal edema, wheezing, which are signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis. Discontinue the drug and notify the physician immediately.
-Watch for central nervous system adverse reactions, the medicine is potential for seizure.
- Observe for injection site phlebitis during infusion.
-Observe for blood ,pus, or mucus containing diarrhoea. it may be due to Clostridium difficile infection triggered by the drug.
-Oberve for superinfection symptoms like black, furry overgrowth on the tongue, vaginal itching or discharge, loose or foul-smelling stools and notify the physician.
