The major roadblocks that exist in communications and their remedies are as follows:
1. Generalizing /Labelling:
We often generalise or stereotype one’s behaviour because he or she has done it repeated number of times. This creates a sense of bias within us and whenever we try to communicate, we already have an opinion in mind and hence, the communication is not that effective and proper
Remedy : We should refrain from generalising or labelling one person even though its repeated for a number of times. Each time should be treated as a fresh case.
2. Jumping to Conclusions
One of the common mistakes while communicating is ‘Jumping to conclusions. Sometimes based on our gut feeling, we overlook the details of the matter and hence, miss out the crisp of the matter. This not only gives a faulty result, rather the other person doubts the credibility of the thought process.
Remedy: We should focus on details of the matter, rather having an opinionated conclusion based on our gut feeling. An eye to the detail plays a major role in the process.
3. Lying
It’s one of the major roadblocks for a communication as it increases sense of doubt in other’s perception. This way, we lose credibility and sense of trust. It can cost us a meaningful and lasting connection.
Remedy: We should try to avoid lying with the persons we are communicating. It’s said the value of word for an individual is of utmost importance.
4. Moralizing
We often start giving moral advice on things like what we should be doing & what we shouldn’t. That might be good in his personal interest, but he/she might not be expecting this from you. The chances are that he doesn’t remain to be your friend for a long time. This way, your communication gets hampered
Remedy : We should avoid this sort of moral policing. If we really feel to provide this kind of support, try to earn a platform to give insights by being a patient listener
