●The three major ethical approach for a healthcare worker are rationing, restrictions and responsibility in case of natural disasters.

A nurse could choose the rationing as a ethical approach in treating patients in disaster. Doing this can save lives by training the patient for medical help.A maximum number of victims can be treated by this approach.

●Some of the ways a nurse can prevent moral distress when personal decision making process conflicts are

  • Follow the nursing code of ethics in the practice daily so that it can be inculcated in the times of disasters
  • Participation in nursing education programs and being updated from reading journals and getting knowledge to make decision in these types if situation
  • Can get knowledge and help fro professional association
  • Employee counselling services can be attended to be aware of the ethical practices
  • Support from ethics expert can be met to know how to handle these types of situations

●Some of the guidance provided by the ANA for the nurses in natural disaster are

  • Nurses should be aware of any issues arising out of natural disaster so that they could save themselves and the patients from dangers
  • The utility of the code from ANA can be used to orovide guidance and ethical solutions to problems.
  • Provision 5 in code of ethics clearly states that self care and safety should be done for oneself also when taking care of a patient.for example in case of nuclear explosion it can harm anybody being exposed ,here a nurse must take self care and safety measures before caring for the victims.
