Hematopoiesis is the process of production of cellular components of blood and blood plasma. It occurs in spleen, liver and bone marrow. It occurs during first week of embryonic development. Red blood cells have life span of 120 days and white blood cells have shorter life span. The body continuously manufactures new blood cells and replace older cells. The process starts from unspecialised stem cell. This multiplies and some of these new cell transforms into precursor cells. The immature cells formed will divide and matures to blood components such as red blood cells, white blood cell and platelets.
Some blood disorders can affect healthy blood cells when Hematopoiesis occurs. Example for such disorders are lymphoma and leukaemia. They can alter number of white blood cells in the blood stream. Tumours in hematopoitic tissue that are responsible for producing blood cells such aa bone marrow can affect blood cells count. Leukaemia is the tumour that arise fro the transformation of hematopoitic cell in the blood or hematopoitic precursor in bone marrow.
