Impaired Gas Exchange :-

- Impaired Gas Exchange occurs when the diffusion of gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide become impaired due to damaged or some pathological conditions at alveolar- capillary membrane.

- Infective Ventilation.

- Reduced Capacity for gas transportation.

- Inadequate perfusion.

Underlying Principles:-

- Impaired Gas Exchange is due to excessive smoking as it demages the alveolar - capillary membrane .

- It is also due to some of chronic medical conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ( COPD) , Cystic fibrosis, Pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome ( ARDS).

- Injury to chest can also demage the lungs.

- Overdose of drugs or alcohol can also impaired flow of oxygen in and carbon dioxide out of the lung.

Nursing Interventions:-

- Head of the patient's bed should be elevated as it allows increased thoracic capacity and lung expansion.

- Maintain Oxygen administed device to maintain oxygen saturation at 90% or greater.

- Mechanical Ventilation provides supportive care to maintain adequate oxygenation and Ventilation.

- Medicines should be administered at right time as prescribed by doctor.
