Thermoregulation is the ability of an organism to maintain its core body temperature and temperature of the inner body within a certain specific range irrespective of the outer environment.

When the body temperature increases above the normal temperature, if is known as hyperthermia

When the body temperature fall below the normal range it is known as hypothermia.

Thermoregulation is controlled by the hypothalamus. It is known as thermostat. It controls body temperature through negative feedback mechanism by heat and cold sensors.

Thermoregulation is necessary for the body to perform normal biological functions. The metabolic processes carried out in the body can occur only at certain temperature. Also constituency and flow of blood is maintained at a certain set temperature. Activities of CNS, respiratory and cardiac system are performed efficiently under a specific core body temperature.
