Indications

• Peptic ulcer, Zollinger -Ellison syndrome ,pernicious anemia, Mentetrier disease ,Achlorhydria
• To prepare for any gastrointestinal surgery
• To diagnose and accurately treat a patient and avoid unnecessary major procedures
• To help in differentiating the type of cancer cells

Nursing intervention

• Explain the procedure to the patient
• Ensure informed consent is taken
• Weigh the patient
• Keep patient NBM for 12 hours as per order
• Do not administer any medications

Potential complications

• Risk for injuring the trachea
• Pain
• Nausea
• Distension of abdomen
• Bleeding
• Dysarrythmia
• Anxiety
• Laryngospasm

Outcomes/Evaluation

• The nature of the acid irs content ,volume,pH can be measured

Patient education

• Prepare the patient by explaining the procedure
• Educate patient about the management of simple side effects
• Encourage to report any major adverse reactions
