It is also called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, it is a lung disease that causes long term obstruction of airflow from the lungs. Human lungs are spongy network of air ways and air sacs which helps for breathing, in COPD inflamation over times cause permanent damage to these ariways and airsacs which result in obstructing the flow of air. As a result of this people with COPD have shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness and ongoing cough with sputum. Gradually when the symptoms get worsened the person experiences difficulty in performing routine activities like climbing stairs or getting dressed. Fatigue, weight loss and muscle loss are the other symptoms. Treatment of COPD consist of lifestyle changes and medical management. It includes quitting smoking, refrain from dust and other air pollutants (chemical fumes, passive smoking etc) which irritates your lung. Medical treatment includes corticosteroids and bronchodilators in the form of inhalers and oral medications. Oxygen therapy is other option to improve the breathing difficulty and surgeries to remove the damaged lung tissues and some times lung transplant may be carried out in severe cases.
