Occupational health is a field with safety, health and welfare of people at work. The goal of occupational safety is to have a safe and healthy work environment.

Due to the repeated exposure to a specific toxin in the work area the lung condition a person may suffer is called as occupational respiratory diseases. Coal mines and factories are the most common areas where the high amount of toxins are present. The allergens include asbestos, smoke, fumes, gases etc.

There are many types of occupational respiratory disorders including coal workers pneumoconiosis or black lung disease, asbestosis, silicosis, farmer’s lung or allergic alveolitis. It may also include asthma, bronchitis and emphysema. Depending upon the work conditions the disease and symptoms encountered by the patient varies. Sore throat, tight chest, runny nose, chest pain, shortness of breath and other breathing problems are commonly seen symptoms on workers. The habit of smoking can worsens the symptoms.

Early recognition and prevention control including respiratory hygiene are administrative control measures that has to be adopted. The early identification, isolation and reporting of potential concerns are central to effective containment and treatment. The administrative should establish channels to inform health care facilities and community about ongoing epidemic issues, so that the facilities will be aware of types of problems likely to encounter by the workers.

As a healthcare provider it is important to recommend measures to prevent the disease. Encourage the use of respiratory hygiene and educate about its importance. Cover the mouth and nose while working as well as in the time of coughing or sneezing inorder to prevent the transmission of infection. Occupational masks, gloves googles etc can be used for safety. Hand hygiene must be promoted to reduce the dispersal of respiratory secretions containing potentially infectious particles. Implement IPC precautions if any suspected pathogens is found.

Report all available information regarding the disease to public health authorities via local surveillance system.
