Maternal smoking affects DNA methylation of the promoter of glococorticoid receptor. This receptor is important mediator of glucocorticoid signaling which is a major component of stress response system and linked to anxiety and depression. Also maternal smoking is associated with differential mi RNA expression causing repression of translation process. Therefore miRNA is thought to be involved in cell proliferation, apoptosis and differentiation.
