What are your strengths? With this question your interviewer wants to know what you’re good at. But in fact, there’s more to it than that. He wants to know how your strengths can be utilised in this role and if you’re the best person in comparison to your competition. This question reveals a lot about your personality. Now if you answer too arrogantly, and you may be shown the door, if you answer too humbly, and you may receive a similar fate; as it is all about providing an answer that’s just right, that will show you fit in with the company culture.

You need to break down your response into various different parts, what are your strengths, how they relate to the job; how they set you different from the competition, and your delivery.

When planning to answer about your strength, it’s best to have two or three great strengths in mind. As you can’t predict the conversation of the interview, and after discussing the role a bit more, you might find one strength is more appropriate to mention than another.

There are four types of strengths one can discuss. Firstly, there’s your experience, your knowledge of the job you are conducting in the industry or a piece of software. Secondly, it is about your skill that you are able to transfer to others, such as communication and leadership. You don’t necessarily have to have obtained these from within the workplace; life skills also count to this.Then there’s your education and qualifications, such as your degree. And finally, there are your talents, such as your ability to write whitepapers or sell social media software.

If you obtained your time management and organisation skills, explain your learning process if you have to admit you started out pulling your nighters. Not only will the recruiters appreciate your honesty, but they’ll know that you can overcome mistakes and develop further

It is these small details that will make you more memorable, not just because you’ve provided a specific example to prove why your strength is a strength, but because your personality makes you stand out from the competition.

The delivery of your response can make or break your chances. Responding humbly with, I guess my greatest strength is, or I suppose my greatest strength is, could lead the recruiter to doubt your interview preparation and self-awareness. Respond arrogantly from your high horse, and the interviewer may question your work ethic and honesty.

When it comes to your delivery, it’s all about finding the difference between your self - awareness and your confidence. As long as your response is clear and filled with self-belief, you’re onto a winner.
