It is defined as it is a critical examination or monitoring of health care services which are provided by the physicians and health care professionals to the patients with the purposes of control of health care cost by identification of unnecessary procedures and also monitoring the quality of care.

Three categories of utilization review :

1. Prospective : means it is monitoring or evaluation of patients therapy before administration of medications or before doing any procedures.

If it in organizations means monitoring of employees work before implementing supportive strategies.

2. Concurrent : it is an ongoing monitoring of employees work or activities.

3. Retrospective : It means review the employees work or patient drug therapy after implementation.

These utilization review is very important to frame work for utilization management.
