Mark Vincenzo, director of the Outpatient Clinics at Lakeview Medical Center, is meeting with the members of the staff development team in the hope of gaining approval for a new class on writing behavioral objectives. “Teaching is such an important part of what we do in the clinics that it is vital that all staff are able to develop and implement well-written teaching plans.” He has found that many of the staff need more detailed instruction than what currently exists in the new staff orientation, particularly in the area of constructing clear, concise, and realistic behavioral objectives. “We can’t measure and document the outcomes of our teaching very well if the staff aren’t writing good behavioral objectives to guide their patient teaching.”

You have been asked to develop two 1-hour classes on writing behavioral objectives that will be offered to all new and current employees of the Lakeview Medical Center. The first class will cover basic information about how to formulate good objective statements. During the second class, participants will apply what they have learned by writing objectives based on case scenarios and enter them into sample teaching plans in the electronic medical record.
