Answer) irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by the abdominal cramps, bloating and alternate cycles of diarrhea and constipation. It is also known as spastic colon or nervous colon. It affects the people below 45 years mainly.

We classify ibs in 4 types

1)ibs with diarrhea

2)ibs with constipation

3)ibs with both constipation and diarrhea, called as mixed ibs

4)unsubtyped ibs.

Pathophysiology of ibs-it is a type of hypersensitive reaction to the mild stimulation, which causes spasm of the git tract. Resulting in abdominal cramps, diarrhea and constipation.

Management-it mainly focus on the avoidance of the substance that overstimulate the g. I tract, common one are peppers, chilli, etc.

Increase fibres in the diet and avoid taking large meals.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Take food rich in FoDmap(fermdntable oligosaccharides, dissacharides, monosaccharides, polyols).

Start taking probiotics to restore the bacterial flora of the intestine.

Antidepressants medications are given if it is stress related ibs.

Loperamide is used for ibs with diarrhea.

Stool softner or purgatives are used to treat constipation dominated ibs.
