According to The Joint Commission, the standards for the management of pain for all patients:

- Recognizing the right of patient to appropriate assessment and management of pain.

- Screening patients for pain during initial assessment and when clinically required, during ongoing, periodic reassessments.

- Teaching patient and families about effective pain management.

Pain assessment steps:

(1) accept the patient's report. (2)Determine the status of the pain. (3) describe the pain: location, quality, intensity, aggravating and alleviating factors. (4) examine the site. (5) Identify coping methods. (6) record the assessment, interventions, and evaluation of interventions.

Pain regimen:

Opioids
-Morphine,
-codeine
-dilaudid/(Hydromorphone)
-No Demerol (meperidine)
NSAIDS
-Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
-Toradol
-ibuprofen
Nonnarcotic analgesics
