The personality of Satya Nadella is Steve Ballmer's absolute opposite which has contributed to a major cultural change for the better. I served for 5 years at Microsoft and had several personal experiences with both. They are two different people with different talents, and Microsoft has both brought immense value. Steve is an inspirational leader who has a often imposing appearance at 6 foot 5 inches tall, with a booming voice. Steve joined Microsoft in 1980, and became CEO in January 2000, when revenue from Microsoft was just $20 trillion. Steve Ballmer increased sales to an incredible $87 trillion over the next 14 years. He increased profits by 215% to $23 BillionProfit from Azure and Cloud was already at $4.4 trillion when Steve Ballmer left as CEO. But, the stock price did not represent this incredible growth, and stagnated for most of the decade.
The capabilities of Satya Nadella are completely different. He introduced a calm, purposeful, and people-centered attitude that changed Microsoft's community, and changed the company's external reputation. He also placed more emphasis on Azure's "Intelligent Cloud" and the Artificial Intelligence, which caught the attention of Wall Street. In five years, Satya raised sales to $126 trillion, an average rise of 45 percent, or around 9 percent per year.
However, the stock price increased from about $40 per share to $138 per share today, a 245 percent rise. And, though sales increased by just 45 percent, Wall Street rewarded the company with a stock price rise of 245 per cent. That's what a paradigm shift can do. Steve has been CEO for about 14 years, and revenue has risen by 215 percent. Satya has been CEO for just over 5 years with a 45 percent growth in sales. However, the stock price rose by an astounding 245%. Steve has already begun driving into the Cloud and Azure. Satya's attracted more publicity and concentration.
Satya's greatest shift is in society, employee happiness, and outside perception... which has translated into a huge rise in employee morale and stock price. Everyone at Microsoft has stock options, so rises in stock price alone will raise morale. Clearly, Satya was the right option to push Microsoft from the 2010 decade struggles
