In India what are the metrics for health care access including the number of available skilled health professionals, mental health workers, dentists, and surgeons?
India is the 2nd populated country in the world, due to the increased number of population and the covering a large geographical area it was very difficult to provide the health care services to the needy once in India. Also, around 50 percent of the population were residing in rural area and there was limited access to the people and poor literacy rate, other cultural aspects etc were find as the obstacles. Apart from these things we can see a shortage of manpower in the field of health care, it can be very much evident with mental health care professionals. In India to serve about 121 crore population there are only 9000 psychiatrist, 2000 psychiatric nurses, 1000 clinical psychologist and 1000 psychiatric social workers. And if we assume that at least one person should be there from each category to serve about 1 lakh population then needs for the psychiatrist were 30000 more, and nurses would be 37000 and in the case of clinical psychologist and the psychiatric social worker it will be 38000. It is a huge number considering countries current developmental scenario of India. It is a single example mental health setting the same can be seen with other health professionals such as dentists and surgeon. It was become more difficulty to access the health care facility in the rural population in the near past.
